A BRIEF HISTORY : Galicka Svadba

Year : 1955
Production date: 1955

With this film Galicka Svadba, Aco Petrovski discloses the preparations for a traditional wedding.

Aco Petrovski (1923 - 2001) fully demonstrates his skill in Galicka Svabda. The film-maker accurately conveys reality while elaborating an aesthetic lyricism, typical of his entire body of work (see also Dervisi). A penetrating nostalgia permeates this film, of which the poetic and aesthetic universe is akin to that of Tracje Popov in Ritam i Zvuk.

After World War II, Macedonia became a federated Republic of the new Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Under communist rule but autonomous, Yugoslavian Macedonia was able to cultivate the Macedonian identity for the first time in its history. All the more so that it took in the Aegean Macedonian populations that had fled the Greek civil war between 1945 and 1948.

Petrovski is, along with Popov, one of the masters of Macedonian post-war cinema. In 1950, he helped found the National Film Archives, as a part of “Vardar Film”.  After several years in Skopje television and a stint as producer at the Community of Film Workers, he returned to “Vardar Film”. Finally, he retired as a director of a Kinoteka na Makedonija/ Cinematheque of Macedonia. His creative career marked the history of Macedonian cinema through his unflagging efforts to engrave the memory of his people on film.
