Tartarin, Opfer eines Fünffrankenstückes
Tartarin and the Five-franc Coin

Tartarin and Toto are loafing around when a passer-by loses his wallet right under their noses. They return it to him immediately, and, as a reward, get a five-franc coin. Discord is sown between the two fellows.

A BRIEF HISTORY : Tartarin, Opfer eines Fünffrankenstückes

Year : 1912
Production date: 1912

This film is part of the Tartarin series. This hero is a recurrent figure of Italian comedy. At the time, the masters of comedy are Italian or French. Between 1912 and 1913, Tartarin is in turn: a painter, a revolutionary, a man in love, and even faces film censorship (Tartarino pintore, Tartarino e la censura cinematografica, Tartarin innamorato, Tartarin rivoluzionario). Cesare Quest, only actor identified up to now in this film, embodies this tall beanpole from the military.

Quest plays many comical parts, in particular with the leading light in Italian film production: the unmistakable Luigi Maggi. Maggi (1867-1946) is the author of, among others: Golden Wedding (Nozze d’oro 1911) and Grenadier Roland (Il Granatiere Roland 1910). He directs more than 70 films in less than 15 years, and also makes an appearance in over fifty!

According to the ANICA (Associazione Nazionale Industrie Cinematografiche Audiovisive e Multimediali), a certain Giuseppe Gray directs the whole series of Tartarin films. However, little is known about his career.

This film has been restored thanks to the collaboration between the Cineteca del Friuli and the Berlin Deutsche Kinemathek. The original print is in black and white with German intertitles tinted in red. In 1993 a private individual has donated it in Berlin.

The original music for this film was composed by Aidje Tafial in 2008.
