A BRIEF HISTORY : Kri-Kri martire della suocera

Screened in 1915, this comedy presented Kri-Kri, more known by the French public under the nickname Patachon.
In the great tradition of Italian burlesque at the beginning of the century, here we find a character tormented by his mother-in-law who wishes to get his revenge.
Disguised as Kri-Kri was French actor Raymond Frau, famous since 1910 under the stage name "Dandy".
While he was still only a teenager, Raymond Frau regularly performed in a troupe of floor acrobats. In 1912 he left Paris for Rome where he was hired by the Cinès studios, already producers of the comic series Tontolini. Frau offered them his Kri-Kri creation and filmed nearly 140 short films presenting it.
After the war he went back to France and incarnated a new character right out of his imagination called Dandy.
Raymond Frau's success in Italy wasn't an isolated case and relied on the simple fact that Italian cinema was greatly inspired by French theatrical traditions. In fact French-style light comedy, of which Frau was a specialist on stage, exported its comic tools to a number of countries.
Furthermore, the Kri-Kri series also provided a bunch of innovations, which earned him notoriety, although it was late in coming. Indeed in Kri-Kri martire della suocera but above all in Kri-Kri fuma l'oppio when the hero hallucinates after consuming opium, note the early use of special effects that provided novelty and ranked Kri-Kri among the leading characters of Italian burlesque at the beginning of the 20th century.
